Clicker Training
What is "clicker training"? Desirable behaviour in your dog is marked by using a "clicker" a mechanical device that makes a short, distinct "click" sound, which tells your dog exactly which behaviour earned the reward. We believe passionately in the power of the clicker training approach to enrich the lives of pets and their owners.
How does clicker training work?
There is no need to physically manhandle your dog into doing anything. The trainer simply clicks at the moment the desired behaviour occurs. For example, when the dog sits the trainer clicks and treats. The dog then works out how to make that click work and the treat appear. Congratulations, your dog has learnt to sit without using any force and without you saying a word!
Why is a clicker used?
The
essential difference between clicker training and other reward-based
training is that the animal is told
exactly
which behaviour earned the reward. This information is communicated with the
distinct and unique sound, a click, which is not heard in other
circumstances.
How long does it take to learn?
Through clicker training, dogs learn quickly to repeat an action in order to earn a reward. With repetition, consistency and reward, dogs develop confidence because they have control over the consequences of their actions and you will have an interested, alert and happy dog.
Why is clicker training effective?
Sometimes people are surprised by the enthusiasm and dedication clicker
trainers have for their method. Changing focus to
positive reward-based training can certainly be a life-changing event for you and your dog.
